Yes, it's sunny and toasty on the Mendonoma Coast today with not much wind. Sounds like a good day to head for the beach. Ruth Alexander was at Moat Creek on a sparkling day recently and photographed this Western Gull looking out at the Pacific Ocean.

Western Gulls are the only gull that nests on our coast. And they are year round residents.

There is a trail from Moat Creek to Bowling Ball Beach. You can find out more about it at the Mendocino Land Trust's site at this link: https://www.mendocinolandtrust.org/trails/southern-coastal-trails/moat-creek-to-schooner-gulch-trail/

Thanks to Ruth for allowing me to share her photo with you here.

This is the time of year we see fledglings, chicks who have left their nest. Ruth Alexander photographed several Northern Flickers recently, one even perched on her window sill, looking in the window. We think this photo shows a juvenile  male.

Here is a photo by Paul Brewer of an adult, which has red on its cheeks rather than the light color in Ruth's photo.

If you look closely at a flicker's chest feathers, they look like little hearts.

Local streams and rivers were beneficiaries of the late May rains. Ruth Alexander photographed the beautiful cascades along Salal Creek, a public access trail on The Sea Ranch.

I did a post a couple of years ago on how to find the Salal Trail. Here is a link to that post: http://www.mendonomasightings.com/tag/salal-trail/

You will learn the trail actually starts at Gualala Point Regional Park.

Ruth Alexander recently photographed several lounging Harbor Seals.

Even though they are sleeping on rocks, they sure do look comfortable. A nice layer of blubber must make those rocks feel like a comfy bed. A couple of fun photos for you today to hopefully make you smile.

We are having a total washout today - rain, rain and more rain. It should be over by next week. Then the waterfalls will be rejuvenated and the wildflowers freshened. Memorial Day weekend could be perfect on the Mendonoma coast.

The smoke is much less today, thank goodness, and we expect rain next week. While the onshore breeze brought heavy smoke over the Mendonoma coast, the smoke turned the sun, and the moon, a scarlet red at times. Ron Bolander photographed this sight a few days ago. Look at the red/orange "pathway" across the Pacific Ocean.

Barry Weiss captured it too.

Craig Tooley photographed The Sea Ranch White Barn in the smoky air.

And Paul Palestrini photographed a fiery sunset.

Lastly, Ruth Alexander photographed this amazing sunrise at The Sea Ranch.

Everyone is praying for rain and the end of the terrible fires, and we are so sad for those who  have lost everything. Many of us knew someone who lived in Paradise. We always hold our breath this time of year, knowing everything is so dry. With rain forecast for next week, we can let that breath out in relief.

Thanks to Ron, Barry, Craig, Paul and Ruth for allowing me to share their photos with you here.
