Gail Jackson photographed a yellow-faced bumblebee flying out of a California poppy blossom. Yellow pollen is coating the face and legs of this pollinator, nearly matching the patch of bright yellow hair on her head. If you look closely, you can see several grains of pollen drifting down from the bee. And she sports an orange pollen basket, called a corbicula, on her hind legs.

It's toasty warm here today. The smoke from the fire at Salt Point State Park/Timber Cove is south of us so it's a beautiful blue-sky breezy warm day here!

Even if Rick and I are pressed for time, a walk on the Gualala Bluff Trail is easy to fit in. And Huckleberry, our golden retriever, never turns down a walk. We parked along Highway One in front of the Shoreline Restaurant and accessed the trail between the restaurant and the Breaker's Inn. Spring has sprung along the trail and even in the foggy morning the trail was alive with color.

 Rick and Huckleberry are urging me to catch up!

 It looks like Huck is thinking, "So many poppies, so little time..."

Wildflowers burst into bloom this week on the Mendocino and Sonoma Coasts with just a few days of warm sunny weather. On a drive down Highway One a few days ago, Rick and I saw the first Lupine in bloom. Wild Iris - Douglas Iris - caught our eyes with their brilliant splashes of blue. Bright orange Poppies, California's state flower, have joined in the party. The wildflowers in the forest are a bit more subtle but worth your attention too. The beautiful False Solomon Seal has just bloomed and the forest floor is carpeted with the yellow-faced Redwood Violets.
