Paul Brewer recently photographed this Gray Whale calf spyhopping.

You can see the calf's mother on the left side of Paul's photo. Spyhopping is when a whale comes out of the water vertically, seemingly taking a look around. Maybe the calf was taking at look at the Brewers! These Grays are headed northward to their feeding grounds in the Arctic.

We are having cool weather with a high fog today. Warmer weather is to return next week.

Last week Sarah Flaim photographed the Moon with Jupiter far beneath it. Just lovely.

Thanks to Sarah for allowing me to share her photo with you here.

I had my first sightings of a wild rhododendron in bloom, a Pacific Rhododendron in bloom along side Highway One in Salt Point State Park. A patch of orange-red Coast Lilies is blooming along the highway too. This is a wonderful time of year on the Mendonoma coast.

Craig Tooley photographed one of the first Fawns to be born this spring, following its mother.

So small, so precious and so many spots! Craig said that just after he took this photo, the little fawn went under the bushes on the left side of  his photo and took a nap. As Fawns continue to be born, it's important to slow down and watch for them. Fawns follow their mothers, and twin fawns are likely. So if a Doe crosses the road, wait a minute to see if a fawn...or two...or even three might be following behind.

The weather is wonderful. Head for the coast!

Michael Beattie is monitoring several sites where Peregrine Falcons have nested the past few years on the Mendocino coast. He caught this Peregrine preening recently.

And then shaking his/her leg.

Here's a photo Michael took last year of  Peregrine Falcon in flight, and looking at Michael!

We are happy Peregrines have returned to the Mendonoma Coast, along with Bald Eagles.

Thanks to Michael for allowing me to share his photos with you here.
