Yes, it's sunny and toasty on the Mendonoma Coast today with not much wind. Sounds like a good day to head for the beach. Ruth Alexander was at Moat Creek on a sparkling day recently and photographed this Western Gull looking out at the Pacific Ocean.

Western Gulls are the only gull that nests on our coast. And they are year round residents.

When the storms come, they rip the Bull Kelp from its holdfasts in the ocean and toss much of it on the beach. It provides food and shelter for various critters that live on the beach. Patty Stornetta Woodruff recently photographed Kelp on the beach by the Botanical Gardens in Fort Bragg.

How do you say Happy Valentine's Day to the ones you love? Craig Tooley and Rita Peck created a heart made of driftwood on the beach at The Sea Ranch.
