There have been multiple sightings of several Red-shouldered Hawks recently. Richard Zweig photographed one perched on top of a bush.

These medium-size hawks prey on rodents, frogs and snakes. Perhaps Richard found this hawk listening for its next meal. They have a whistling call, which you can listen to here: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-shouldered_Hawk/sounds

Thanks To Richard for allowing me to share his photo with you here.

We are having another sunny day, but there is rain coming in a few days!

Jennifer Massey has a pair of these beautiful hawks coming to a tree on Sea Ranch. She recently photographed one of them in the tree.

Craig Tooley also photographed a Red-shouldered Hawk, either exercising its wings or preparing for flight.

Thanks to Jennifer and Craig for allowing me to share their photos with you here. It's storming on the Mendonoma coast this afternoon!

Such a beautiful hawk! Paul Brewer spotted this young Red-shouldered Hawk in late August.

Paul said the fledgling had been trying to hunt, but wasn't very good at it. I'm sure hunger improved this hawk's hunting ability.

Paul got another look recently at what we presume is the same young Red-shouldered Hawk. The first photo below had me laughing. It's not often you see a bird with its head tilted back, looking behind its body!

Red-shouldered Hawk are year-round residents of the Mendonoma coast. Thanks to Paul for allowing me to share his photos with you here. To see much more of Paul's nature photography, here is the link to his website: http://www.capturingnatureswonders.com/

In our last series of rainstorms, John Batchelder photographed a very bedraggled, soaked Red-shouldered Hawk.

The hawk doesn't look too happy, does he? Hope he dried out over the past several days of sun.  Here's a photo John took of one of these hawks on a dry day.

Another series of storms is predicted to bring lots of rain to the Mendonoma Coast starting late tomorrow. Here we go again!

Thanks to John for allowing me to share his photo with you here.

I'll let Zak tell the story.

"A Red-shouldered Hawk alighted upon the very same spot on the Redwood where the Peregrine Falcon has been doing his courtship for the last two years. He was only too eager to primp and pose for these shots, trying his luck at the ladies."

“The Peregrine Falcon returned a few days later, to claim his territory with the lady bird, as they bonded two years ago. The monogamous pair now returns every year around this time to do the dance.”

It's always a treat to see a Peregrine Falcon and the beautiful hawk! Thanks to Zak for allowing me to share his photos with you here.
