Yes, we know there is only one sun and that this is some kind of mirage. Possibly a sun pillar was beginning to form. It does make for a lovely sunset photo.

Jack Likins went diving off The Sea Ranch on Father's Day, last Sunday. The visibility was good and he had a most successful dive. Jack found a big one, a trophy Abalone. It measured 10 and 9/16 inches.
That's the perfect Father's Day gift for an experienced diver like Jack. Thayer Walker, Jr. took the photo and I thank him for allowing me to share it with you here.

Our first heat wave of the year is here. Of course a heat wave on the coast doesn't compare to inland temps. When we get close to 80 degrees we are having a heat wave! Allen Vinson photographed a Harbor Seal that looks pretty darn happy.
Lots of visitors are already here and more are sure to come with the big Gulf of the Farallones Sanctuary expansion celebration on Sunday at Gualala Arts. 11 am to 3 pm and the event is free. Plenty of kid-friendly activities too.

Michael Reinhart was watching an Osprey eating a fish when he was startled to see this River Otter climbing up the bluff.
River Otters are fascinating creatures. A family of otters lives in the lagoon of the Gualala River. Below is a photo by Gary Hopkins of a River Otter and a Western Gull facing off. That gull should have been worried, as River Otters will take a gull for their dinner.

Drew Fagan has an Osprey nest close to his home. He photographed the male arriving.
And here the Osprey is doing what Drew calls 'home improvement.'
And the last photo shows the Osprey bringing kelp to line the nest.
In the nest Rick and I can see through our spotting scope, which is a bit south of the nest Drew photographed, the two chicks are getting noticeably bigger. The scrawny chicks are now feathered out and moving about the nest. They need to get bigger and stronger before they fledge.
