John Batchelder was watching Sea Lions rafting and feeding recently when three Humpback Whales showed up. One breached as John was ready with his camera.

And here's where the whale hit the water. Notice the birds nearby - these are extremely rare Black-vented Shearwaters.

Here's a photo where John shows the three Humpbacks.

Great Blue Herons walk with a stately grace. And seeing one fly, with its slow wing beats, is a treat. Martin  and Rene Steinpress recently saw one on a bluff on The Sea Ranch while they were walking on one of the public access trails.

Great Blue Herons eat small mammals, and they eat fish too. Here is one of my favorite photos of a GBH, just taking off from the water. This photo was taken by Paul Brewer.

Don Spear was up early to photograph planets in the night sky. When the sunrise came, he was rewarded with this photo.

A big, wet fogbank rolled in two weeks ago, dropped a lot of moisture, and then pulled back. When it pulled back, a beautiful, huge fogbow appeared just north of Fish Rocks. I rushed outside to take a few photos, as I knew it wouldn’t last long.

Fogbows are also called white rainbows, but this one actually had some color to it. Not vibrant like a rainbow, but definitely there was color. At one point it arched all the way across sky, rainbow-like, but I couldn’t capture it all with my camera. But it is stored in my memory.

Here is a photo of the first fogbow I had ever seen. It was much smaller than the one above.

Fogbows are rare, so I was thrilled to see another one.

Pelicans, Brown and White, are so graceful in the air, but not always so graceful when then come in for a water landing. Ron LeValley photographed this White Pelican near Bodega Bay. I wonder if the Marbled Godwits in the foreground were worried.
