Sightings

After a very dry December, we are looking forward to some wet stuff - rain! With the rain, we hope the coast's seasonal creeks will come back to life and bring us sightings of waterfalls.

In late November, Amy Ruegg photographed this waterfall at Stengel Beach, one of the public access trails on The Sea Ranch.

We will also be watching to see when the Gualala River will breach the sandbar that currently is blocking most of the river from entering the Pacific Ocean. The best place to witness this exciting event is from the Gualala Bluff Trail.

And we will be looking for more mushrooms to appear. Winter is a fun and interesting time to be on the Mendonoma coast.

Richard Kuehn recently photographed the Bald Eagle pair that has been seen by the Russian River in Jenner with the Pacific Ocean behind them.

Perhaps these two majestic eagles will join me in wishing you a Happy New Year!

About two weeks ago a storm left behind quite a cloud show, and brought rainbows. Marcelia Fosse wrote, “I caught this beautiful rainbow traveling northbound on the South Coast this past week. Yet another lucky Mendonoma blessing!”

We do have some rain in the forecast and we hope it arrives. The weather has been warm and dry, a boon for all the visitors who are here for the holidays.

Once again the beauty of a sunset took our breath away. Christmas day's sunset was amazing.

The Pacific Ocean glowed a beautiful pink and then mauve as the sunset evolved.

A nice “Merry Christmas” greeting came in from Anchor Bay Campground residents, Jim Corbett and Sheila Shapiro. I titled Sheila’s photo “Nature’s Christmas tree,” as it is made of driftwood, abalone shells, beach glass and other shells.

We are having lovely weather here on the Mendonoma Coast. And there are lots of visitors here to enjoy the balmy days. Gray Whales, heading south, are being seen. The best place to watch their migration is from the bluffs of the Point Arena Lighthouse.

This photo was taken by photographer Jim Grant from Sunset Cliffs in San Diego. While it wasn't taken from the Mendonoma coast, it is such a special photo that I wanted to share it with you here.

Jim's photo shows multiple green flashes, and even shows the elusive blue/violet on the edges, which we rarely get to see. Congratulations, Jim, on capturing such a beautiful sight. And thank you for allowing me to share it here.
