Paul Brewer photographed the beautiful sunset from the banks of the Gualala River. You can see the river is currently closed to the Pacific Ocean by the sandbar. Past the sandbar is the ocean.

Grace O'Malley recently photographed these two Western gulls flying in tandem in an oh-so-blue sky.

Two Western gulls by Grace O'MalleyWestern gulls are year round residents of the Mendonoma coast. Yesterday I saw Western gull chicks on a rocky island off the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands. Here's a photo Jan de Vries took of three gull chicks, one hopping in the air, testing its wings, and two on the ground.

We are proud of the Point Arena Lighthouse. It's 115 feet tall, gleaming white, a sentinel to the past when ships needed its light to guide their way. Craig Tooley took this photo from an airplane.

The Point Arena Lighthouse will celebrate National Lighthouse Day on Sunday, August 7 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  All visitors will enjoy free admission to the Grounds, Museum and Tower Tours.  Wind, weather and emergencies permitting this great day will also feature the Berkeley Kite Wranglers flying their amazing kites over the grounds and a static display of a Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter!  Guests can also purchase award-winning clam chowder from the River Grill, and finish it off with Lighthouse Keepers Strawberry Shortcake and home baked brownies.

3rd Annual Discover the Coast

The Friends of Point Arena-Stornetta Lands, the Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers and the Bureau of Land Management invites you to the 3rd Annual Discover the Coast, on Saturday August 6, from 10am to 2pm at Point Arena City Hall, from 10am to 4pm at the Point Arena Lighthouse, and a screening of the documentary “Dancing Salmon Home” at 6pm at the Coast Community Library.

Enjoy a day of discovery at the Point Arena - Stornetta Unit of the California Coastal National Monument, the Mendocino College Field Station and the Point Arena Lighthouse. Explore the Discovery Trail, exhibits and food booths.   Free admission, parking and shuttle.
