I love these beautiful birds. White-tailed Kites are a joy to see. John Batchelder recently photographed an adult hovering in the air, listening for its prey in the meadow below. Watch out, Voles!

Steve Stewart got this great close up of a juvenile White-tailed Kite resting on a branch.

We are having a lovely autumn day on the coast today. Cool and calm, just the way we like it!

This big Bobcat, a male, was seen by Steve Bennett crossing the highway in Point Arena where the roadwork has been taking place, the south end of town.

With the rut of the Black-tailed Deer about to begin, and a Bobcat crossing the highway, it's time to slow down on coast roads.

We are having sunny, mild weather with sunsets to make you sigh in delight.

Lewis Lubin and Laura Baker have an old orchard on their Annapolis property.  Lewis wrote, “During breakfast last Sunday, we saw our neighbor looking for his breakfast of apples and pears from our Annapolis homesite. We all saw each other and respected our boundaries.”

That's a pretty good-sized bear! Here's a couple of favorite photos of a Black Bear eating huckleberries, taken by Jon Shiu.

ooo, lots of huckleberries for the hungry bear! This is a good year for our wild blueberries. Huckleberries are prized by many creatures including migrating birds, Deer, Black Bears...and me!

On such a high fire danger day, when many neighbors inland have had their power turned off, here on the Mendonoma Coast it is cool and breezy. There is rain in the extended forecast - we just need to get through the next couple of days. Fingers crossed!

Rob and Shannon Sunderland were celebrating their wedding anniversary last month. They visited the Point Arena Lighthouse and climbed the tower to the top. Here's the photo Rob took.

The is a fairly large herd of Roosevelt Elk in the Covelo area. Mike Cutler recently sent in a photo of a large male and the smaller female.Yes, it was a foggy day when Mike photographed them. The female on the right has a white patch on her rump.

Mike wrote, “There are about 60 in the main herd, and there are a few groups of young bulls that run around in groups of four to six.”

We wonder if the lone Roosevelt Elk seen with domestic cattle near the hamlet of Elk might be from this herd. So far, he doesn't have a female companion! Here's a recent photo of this lone Elk taken by Paul Brewer.
