John Batchelder managed to photograph one of the fast, little CA Quail chicks he saw recently.

Quail families are being seen now. Several years ago George Anderson captured these newly hatched chicks.

And Clay Yale had two perch on saucer with water.

Here's a cute photo taken by Jon Loveless of the chicks following their mother.

The chicks are very vulnerable now, as they cannot yet fly. The number one predator of these chicks is the domestic house cat.

Thanks to John, George, Clay and Jon for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

George Anderson wrote, “We have not had any [California] Quail chicks in our backyard hedgerow for about five years. This year, a bonanza! The picture shows the young ones nestling and preening after a dust bath. How many can you count? 20 seems to be the consensus answer, but it’s challenging with such great protective coloration.”

It's hard to tell exactly how many little ones are in there! Siegfried Matull took one of my favorite photos of a Quail family, all lined up and easily counted.

There are fourteen little chicks in Siegfried's photo, with the father on the right and the mother on the left.

Thanks to George and Siegfried for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

The Mendonoma Coast is experiencing higher numbers of Pine Siskins and Red-breasted Nuthatches. Ron LeValley informed us that cone-producing trees to the north have failed to produce enough feed for these birds so they have migrated into our area. I love the nasal call of the Red-breasted Nuthatches. They sound like tin horns in the forest. Rick and I hear their calls every day.

Pine Siskins aren't so raucous. One particular bird happened upon a get together of friends on The Sea Ranch recently. It first flew to the shoulder of Dick Balch and then proceeded to walk around his back to the other shoulder. Then it flew to George Anderson's finger where it stayed for a while. Kathy Anderson had retrieved her camera in time to get this photo.

What a gift of trust this little bird gave Dick and  George - a blessing dressed in feathers.
Thanks to Kathy for allowing me to share her photo with you here.
