When fresh up, Western Trilliums are white. As they age they turn pink and then purple. Craig Tooley photographed one as it changed to pink.

Craig mentioned that it looked like it had been hand-painted.

A wet storm hit the Mendonoma Coast in the wee hours of the morning, bringing two inches of rain at our place in Anchor Bay. There are several more storms to come, for which we are very grateful.

Thanks to Craig for allowing me to share his photo with you here. To see much more of Craig's nature photography, here is the link to his website: www.ruffimage.com

Harm Wilkinson captured this evocative sunset as a Brown Pelican flew by.

Today it is pouring down rain. Flood warnings abound. The seasonal creek that crosses our land is doing its best imitation of a mighty river. I will share photos of it soon. After four years of drought, we are very thankful for this rain!

A big sandbar once again closed the Gualala River to the Pacific Ocean for much of January. While the river opens and closes regularly during the winter with the tides, it is very unusual for it to close in the winter for weeks. I've recently posted photos of the full Gualala River. With the help from a big rainstorm, the river breached the sandbar on Friday, Feb. 6th around 4 pm and began to surge into the ocean. Mike Mee was there to see it happen.

It is very exciting to watch this phenomenon as the pent-up river churns its way into the ocean. The sound alone is amazing.

We are waiting for yet another soaking storm. And while there have been many power outages, including us for two days, we are grateful for this bounty from Mother Nature.

Before the storm arrived, there were rainbows this morning. Now that's a nice way to start the day!

Gary Levenson-Palmer recently photographed several beautiful rainbows. The first shows a rare fire rainbow, a horizontal rainbow.

Rainbow days are one of the privileges of being on the Mendonoma Coast.

A storm like this can put a serious dent in ol' man Drought! We are told we may get more than five inches of rain and 50 mile per hour winds. Bring it on, Mother Nature! Robert Scarola photographed a storm cloud moving in.

We know we might have power outages but we are prepared. We haven't had a nice, big storm like this for several years and we are grateful.

Thanks to Robert for allowing me to share his photo with you here. If you are on the Coast this Sunday, Dec. 14th, join Rick and me at the Four-Eyed Frog Bookstore in Gualala at 4 pm for Robert's book event for his new book, Rim of the World.
