On Jan. 19th Bettye Winters photographed the sunset from Irish Beach. Yes, there was a green flash. Bettye's photographs show you what to look for when hoping for a green flash.

 The horizon is clear and the sun appears to separate.

 When you see this separation you know you will see a green flash.

Cathleen was driving in dense fog near Irish Beach in only fifty feet visibility last week. She came around a curve into brilliant sunshine. And there over the fog-shrouded water of the Pacific Ocean was a beautiful fog bow.

We are having spectacular weather here on the Mendonoma Coast in advance of a series of storms that are headed our way. I'm looking forward to having the seasonal creek that crosses our land come to life. That is always a happy day!

When a storm moves on it sometimes leaves unsettled weather behind it. That was the case recently when we had rainbows, even a hail storm and beautiful sunsets. Bettye Winters photographed one of the rainbows near Irish Beach.

 And below is the hail storm, which I photographed from our deck. It hit us some minutes later.

 And the few remaining clouds made for a dramatic sunset Friday night.

Bettye Winters photographed several different sunsets recently from the bluffs near Irish Beach. The Mendonoma Coast has had some early rainstorms and a cold storm is forecast for tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday. Storms to our north bring unsettled skies, which is what Bettye named this first photo.

And the photo below is an example of an autumn sunset. We are fortunate indeed to see the sun set "into" the Pacific Ocean.

 And the photo below could be a painting. Bettye calls this one stormy weather.

Every winter for the past 17 years a wayward Laysan Albatross has over-wintered in the waters off the Point Arena Pier. Birders from all over the world come to the tiny city in hope of adding this bird to their life list. This year Al hasn't spent much time in the cove and we're not sure why. He, or she - we don't really know, is always absent when it is stormy, and today is very stormy here on the Mendonoma Coast!

Al has an affinity for surfers, often paddling over to "talk." Ken Holmes caught a photo of Al and a surfer and he's kindly allowed me to share it with you here.

There have been reports from fishermen that Al has been seen further north and several miles out. People in the Irish Beach/Elk areas should be on the look-out for this famous bird.

We know he/she is not a breeder as winter is when these large birds give birth. Ron LeValley was on Sand Island in the Midway Atoll, Hawaii on Feb. 7th. He photographed this Laysan Albatross mother as her egg hatched and has allowed me to share it with you here. So wonderful!

Last year Al left on March 28th so we know he'll be leaving us soon, hopefully to return again in late November or early December.
