One or more of the stone masons who were here recently for a symposium sponsored by Anchor Bay resident Peter Mullins might have paid a visit to Shell Beach.

Adrian Bennett wrote, “Bill and I took a walk  and came to the south end of Shell Beach to see a true and hardworking artist had been there. There were hundreds of rock art with touches of other objects such as seaweed and driftwood. My neighbor, Roxanne Holmes, was kind enough to get some photos to share.”

Last week Ron LeValley was called by a friend to come look at a pod of Orcas. There was a bell buoy with two CA Sea Lions on it, which is what attracted the Orcas. Orcas LOVE to eat Sea Lions. The first photo shows the small pod, with a juvenile on the lower left. In the second and third photos an Orca approaches the buoy where a doomed Sea Lion waits. The last photo shows the Orca has nabbed its meal.

It is said nature is cruel. I submit nature is always busy.  And everything has to eat.

Mike Mee noticed this male California Quail standing guard on Buddha statue. The rest of the covey was feeding on the ground below.

Here the female joins the male. Robert thinks the male is saying, "Look! This is a great place for a dirt bath."

Paul Brewer spotted this Peregrine Falcon recently.

They hunt medium-sized birds, especially ducks and shorebirds, and their aerial dive is something to see. They have been clocked at 200 miles per hour when diving for their dinner. I have a treat for you. Paul Kozal recently photographed the Milky Way from a sea cave. This is the magnificent result:

We are blessed with a lack of light pollution here on the Mendonoma Coast. The Sea Ranch, in fact, does not allow much outdoor lighting. Without light pollution, the sky is alive with stars and planets...and galaxies!
