Craig Tooley recently photographed a newly-hatched Western Gull chick. Looks like the little one is calling to his or her parents to be fed. "Feed me NOW!"

These chicks have great camouflage, looking like pebbles. Here are two photos Craig took several years ago. The mother Western Gull is very devoted to her little chicks.

Fun Fact: Western Gulls are the only gull species that nests on the Mendonoma Coast.

Another warm, sunny day with breezes. Lots of whitecaps on the ocean today too! Scott Mercer told me at dusk last night, the 4th of July, 8 to 10 Blue Whales passed by, an amazing sighting. That speaks well to the abundance of feed - krill and copepods - in the Pacific Ocean now.

Paul Kozal took these photos from the bluffs overlooking the Point Arena Pier. It was the location for 4th of July fireworks in previous years. This year, fireworks displays have been called off/cancelled. But we can enjoy the bursts of color in Paul's fine photos.

It's sunny and quite warm. Lots of visitors are here enjoying the beautiful Mendonoma Coast. I'm sticking close to home!

The Sea Ranch has a small army of sheep and goats that munch down the grasses, helping to keep the fire danger low. Recently little lambs have appeared, the essence of cuteness. Betty Bailey recently photographed one on top of what she thought was a rock. The rock turned out to be the lamb's mother!

Cool and foggy this morning has given way to sunny and mild.

Pat Maxwell found this Anise Swallowtail Butterfly on her appropriately-named Butterfly bush.

And Catherine Miller spotted this Pale Swallowtail Butterfly feeding on the geraniums in her garden recently.

The other swallowtail we commonly see here on the coast is a Western Tiger Swallowtail. This photo was taken some years ago by Peter Baye. This lovely butterfly is feeding on one of my favorite native wildflowers, the Leopard Lily.

Today is simply one of the most beautiful days on the Mendonoma Coast - sunny, bright with a gently breeze.

Fawns begin arriving around Mother's Day and continue into early summer. Pam Powell photographed a young one who seems curious about Pam.

Gaily Jackson also photographed a Fawn, this one at Gualala Point Regional Park.

The Fawn has natural camouflage, blending in well with the grasses.
