A little over two weeks ago, we had over four inches of rain in some places on the Mendonoma Coast. So we aren't too surprised that the first Boletus edulis, also called Porcini,  have popped up in moist areas. The person who took these photos wants to remain anonymous so I called him/her "a mushroom lover." Here is the proof.

Hopefully more will appear in the days ahead!

It's beautiful on the Mendonoma Coast today, a slight breeze and mild temps. Sunsets have been exquisite lately - I love Autumn on the Coast!

We've had several small storms that brought enough moisture for the first King Boletes to appear. Amy Ruegg found what might have been the very first one.

Several others have found porcini too. And CeCe Case found a Chanterelle. They are being found in moist areas. The spots I find them have not seen any appear...yet!

A smattering of rain was heard last night while I, and others, celebrated the SF Giants baseball win. Today is beautiful, sunny and breezy. The horizon is clear so if you are on the coast, look for a possible green flash at sunset. Below is a photo taken by Peter Cracknell of a green flash. It only lasts for a second, so don't blink!

Holly McCarroll found this beauty, a delicious edible Porcini, aka King Bolete, aka Boletus edulis.

Catherine Miller found a pristine King Bolete today north of Gualala. It's been a strange year for the earlier mushrooms. Winter mushrooms are beginning to appear. The first Matsutakes have appeared, as have the first Hedgehogs. More to come in the days ahead!

Sunny and mild today - temps in the mid 60's. We know it won't last, but we are enjoying the warmth today. Happy New Year!

Amy Ruegg photographed a recent sunset at Pebble Beach, on The Sea Ranch.

Amy also found Oyster mushrooms.

And Scott Mercer found a King Bolete, boletus edulis, in his yard.

I heard that Catherine Miller found her first King Bolete this morning, along with the first Yellow Chanterelle. A combination of some rain (.14 inches at our place early Friday morning, and some heavy fog earlier in the week, seem to have prompted the first bloom of choice, edible mushrooms. Hooray!

The ground is damp, the sun is out and the temps this afternoon are in the high sixties. Perfect!

Last Saturday we received some blessed rain, a quarter of an inch. Of course it came during the nature walk at the Discover the Lands even on the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands.  Justine Rosenthal and Janine Johnson took the walk from Point Arena City Hall to the Mendocino College Field Station. It was near the Field Station in a group of Bishop Pines when they found this beauty, one of the choice edible mushroom here on the coast - a Boletus edulis, King Bolete. That yellow plate is a dinner plate!

No more mushrooms until we receive some rain. It's too dry now. We are waiting for our power to be turned off in advance of the high wrong-way winds forecast for tonight. I may not be able to post for a while. I can tell you that today is absolutely lovely here. May that continue hold true.
