It doesn't happen very often. Usually we see rainbows in the morning out over the ocean, but when conditions are perfect, we get a rainbow in the late afternoon. Jan Jewell photographed part of Sunday's double rainbow.

and-the-view-to-the-west-the-sunset-10-16-16-by-jan-jewellJust beautiful! The soaking rain we received over the weekend was very welcome. We received 3.65 inches at our house in Anchor Bay, a wonderful early autumn gift.

Jan Jewell spotted the Circumhorizontal Arc, also called a Fire Rainbow, a few weeks ago.

A Common Raven can be seen flying by on the right. This phenomenon is caused by the refraction of sunlight in ice crystals found certain clouds, in particular cirrus clouds.

Here is another example of a fire rainbow, this one taken by Peggy Berryhill.

Jan Jewell watched a recent sunrise where the clouds did their best to hide the sun. But the sun came shining through.

We are having a wait-five-minutes kind of day, with sunshine quickly followed by showers. The Pacific Ocean is roaring! It's a fun and exciting weather day here on the Mendonoma Coast.

Jan Jewell noticed this beautiful sight - the moon reflected on the calm ocean.

Rarer than a green flash, a Sun Pillar appeared on January 24th and several coastal residents got a photo of the phenomenon. Richard Hansen took the first photo photo - a spectacular Sun Pillar.

And Jan Jewell got this beautiful photo the same evening.

A Sun Pillar occurs when light from the sun is reflected off thin ice crystal clouds high in the atmosphere in a spot or band pattern vertically above the setting sun,an amazing event to experience.

Thanks to Richard and Jan for allowing me to share their photos with you here. To see my only photo of a Sun Pillar, also called a Sun Dog, here is the link:
