Perry Hoffman was photographing out at the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands when this Bobcat appeared.

You can see the tufted tail that gives the Bobcat its name. And there is a black tip on the short tail. There looks to be gopher holes in the meadows there. Bobcats are excellent gopher hunters!

The rains have left and today was simply stunning. Cool but beautiful. This weekend is forecast to be sunny and warmer! I lost power during last Sunday's storm and just got it back on last night, Thursday night. Other coast residents are still waiting for needed repairs to the electrical system. This weather should certainly help.

Several times Perry Hoffman has spotted a Coyote at the Lands. These first two photos were from a few weeks ago. This coyote looks pretty thin, and perhaps old - there is a lot of white on his/her muzzle.

Recently Perry saw this Coyote - the same one? - walking amidst the Black Angus beef cattle.

The Coyote sure doesn't seem to bother the cows!

Perry tells me he has some of his artwork entered in Gualala Art's "Art in the Redwoods," which will be held this coming weekend, August 19 and 20. It's always a great event to attend. I'll be ringing bells in a sextet both days from 11:30 to 1 pm. You can read more about it at Gualala Art's website at this link: https://gualalaarts.org/

At 5 am this morning, lightning woke some of us up, lightning over the ocean.  Luckily it stayed offshore. Today is cloudy and cool. We even have a chance of a few raindrops!

I love seeing these beautiful birds. Great Blue Herons are year round residents of the Mendonoma Coast. Perry Hoffman recently photographed one on the bluffs at the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands.

What a lovely photo!

We had a vigorous storm come in overnight. There was 1.9 inches of rain in my gauge, and now we've had 10.7 inches season to date! It's cold today, in the low 40's. Lots of clouds dancing across the sky with intermittent sunshine - absolutely stunning!

Bobcats, the cat with the tufted ears and short, bobbed tails can sometimes be seen in grassy meadows. Mike Reinhart spotted one looking at him through the grasses at the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands.

Fun Fact: the markings on a Bobcat's coat are unique to itself, just like our fingerprints!

The weather is...well...it's perfect! Yesterday Humpback Whales were seen. There are quite a few Humpbacks off the Mendonoma Coast right now. By the beginning of November they will be migrating southward and we won't likely see them until next summer. Get to a bluff near  you!

Michael Beattie wrote, “It was just a wonderful day at the Lands today, January 1. We see these two Coyotes on an almost daily basis. They seem to be keeping the Gophers in check. The one we originally saw actually called the second one to their side, and it came quickly from an unseen hideout.”

Here's a close-up of one of the healthy-looking Coyotes.

And here is where the one Coyote was calling to the other one.

Michael also reports a pair of Peregrine Falcons are back at a rocky island off the Lands. He wrote, “I’ve located the old Stornetta pair, and keeping them safe by not visiting too closely.”

Lots of rain from this morning's storm, over one inch. Much more headed our way soon.
