A Brown Shrike has been seen for the past week or so in the Alder Creek area. This bird breeds in central and eastern Asia. Less than a handful has ever been seen in California - a very rare visitor indeed.

It's not easy to photograph the bird, and long lenses are needed. The first photo is by Jeff Petit. And the second was taken by Rich Trissel through his spotting scope.

Birders from afar have come to add this bird to their life list.

Thanks to Jeff and Rich for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

A juvenile Bald Eagle was spotted in Point Arena and this one is banded with the number 92. Beth Petit wrote, “On Tuesday, Mike Weaver, the caretaker at the Loran Station, called Jeff and me to help identify a large bird there, a juvenile Bald Eagle. With the help of Doug Forsell, local biologist, we were able to get more information from Maria Dominquez at the Institute for Wildlife Studies.”

Maria responded that this bird is a male hatched on Santa Cruz Island of the California Channel Islands. It fledged in July. He was named “Liberty” by one of their members. His parents have been nesting there since 2005.

Jeff Petit took these photos and I thank him for allowing me to share them with you here.

We had a male and female Bald Eagle at the Gualala River for several weeks. They have been spotted elsewhere. Jerry Anon photographed them at Anchor Bay Beach.

And Beth and Jeff Petit saw one at the mouth of the Garcia River.

We hope they built a nest somewhere here on the Mendonoma Coast. It has been quite exciting to see these majestic birds. I hope to have new sightings of these eagles soon!

Thanks to Jerry, Beth and Jeff for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

Beth and Jeff Petit were down near the pier in Point Arena in the late afternoon on Feb. 10th. After a long absence Point Arena's most famous visitor soared in from the southwest and landed in his favorite spot on the north side of the pier. Beth got this photo of Al, the Laysan Albatross, coming in for his most welcomed return.

Beth said everybody down at the pier cheered Al's return. Below is a close-up photo, which was taken by John Batchelder. Al...or Alice, we don't really know...is one handsome bird.

Thanks to Beth and John for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

Today we celebrate Valentine's Day and the Mendonoma Coast couldn't be any lovelier. It's warm and there is no wind. In between storms in the winter is one of the best times to be here.

Jeff Petit was out in the Pacific Ocean when he noticed this beautiful Fog Bow.

Fog Bows are similar to rainbows. They are formed in fog rather than rain. When they have no color, as in Jeff's photo, they are sometimes called White Rainbows. Pretty cool sight while out on the ocean!

Thanks to Jeff for sharing his photo with us here.
