Ospreys usually migrate to points south around the first week of autumn. And the vast majority have. But here comes a lone Osprey last week, hunting fish at the Gualala River. Eric Zetterholm was there with his camera.

Looks like the Osprey may have spotted a fish in this second photo.

Ospreys are a rare sighting in the Winter here. But I've been told an occasional Osprey has overwintered here on the Mendonoma Coast in the past. We'll be keeping watch to see if this Osprey is seen again.

Thanks to Eric for allowing me to share his photos with you here.

We are having a sunny day with many high clouds overhead. It's the calm before the storms - we have a series of storms predicted to arrive beginning tomorrow, Friday.

Drew Fagan noticed this Bobcat hunting, and he took four photos showing the hunt and the hunt's result - a Gopher, which seems to be Bobcats favorite meal on the coast.

Drew took one of my all-time favorite Bobcat photos. In fact he allowed me to share it in my book, Mendonoma Sightings Throughout the Year. Drew caught a Bobcat mid-leap, an amazing photo.

Clay Yale noticed this Bobcat staking out an area of Clay's  yard. Bobcats hunt rodents, and they seem to especially enjoy Gophers. When I look at Clay's photo, though, I wonder it this Bobcat is enjoying some sun.

bobcat-by-clay-yaleOne of my favorite photos of a Bobcat pouncing was taken by Drew Fagan. This photo of Drew's appears in my book, Mendonoma Sightings Throughout the Year. I call it a "once in a lifetime" photo. Drew was working in his studio - he's a renowned artist - when he saw the Bobcat. When Drew trained his camera on the Bobcat, the Bobcat pounced.

Mark Ricci noticed the big hawk land on a wire.

Then the Red-tailed Hawk spotted something, something tasty to eat!

The hawk swooped down and nabbed this rodent.

It ate the rodent, tossed away the fur, and then returned to the wire to look for its next meal.

To hear the screaming calls of these hawks, here's a link to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. They even have a recording of an 11 day old chick. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-tailed_Hawk/sounds

Great Blue Herons are year round residents of the Mendonoma Coast. They hunt for a variety of food, including fish and small rodents. Rob Diefenbach recently photographed one on the hunt for a tasty rodent.
