Nik Epanchin photographed the growing sink hole that is north of the gazebo at the Point Arena Lighthouse. This is how it looked Dec. 16th. That white fence used to extend over land that is no longer there.

Dennis Latona recently photographed it from atop the Lighthouse.

And here is what is looked like in January of 2019, taken by Nik. Quite the difference.

It's a good reminder to stay back from the bluff edge, especially this time of year when the bluffs are saturated.

Thanks to Nik and Dennis for allowing me to share their photos with you here.

Sunny and cool - with some edible mushrooms starting to appear! More on that later.

Dennis Latona was at the Point Arena Lighthouse bluffs during the recent King Tides event.

Dennis enjoyed how the super high tides left water cascading off the rocks, creating many tiny waterfalls. The next chance to see this phenomenon is January 20 and 21. And the flip side of the King Tides are big minus-tides, perfect for tide pooling.

We are having clear, cold weather - well, cold for the California coast! 40 degrees this morning. The vanguard of the southward Gray Whale migration has been seen off the Mendonoma coast. Thousands more to come in the days and weeks ahead!

Dennis Latona was staying at one of the vacation rentals at the Point Arena Lighthouse when his wife looked out the window and saw a Long-tailed Weasel head poking up from its burrow opening. Dennis captured several photos.

I was asked by the Press Democrat to do a feature article on this amazing animal. Two Sonoma photographers, Joan Bacci and Steve Pearce, had learned of a Long-tailed Weasel burrow near Ragle Ranch Park in Sebastopol. They shared some of their great photos with me for the article and for this post. This photo by Steve Pearce shows the black tip on their tail.

Joan Bacci captured this weasel yawning to start the day - that's quite a pink tongue the weasel has.

Steve Pearce's photo below shows the slim build of this critter. That allows them to dive into burrows of smaller animals.

Joan Bacci photographed one of the weasels looking out of a burrow opening.

Here is the link to my article in the Press Democrat. There are five other photos by Dennis, Joan and Steve to go along with the article. https://www.pressdemocrat.com/lifestyle/8643471-181/cute-cunning-long-tailed-weasels-thrive?artslide=1

When the fog rolls in, as it often does in the summer, the Point Arena Lighthouse takes on a different, softer look. Dennis Latona recently photographed the tall lighthouse shrouded in fog.

Dennis Latona knows to train his camera on a beautiful scene. Here's what he captured at the Point Cabrillo Light Station as the sun was setting.

Notice the couple sitting on the picnic table watching the sunset unfold - nice!

Point Cabrillo Light Station is a California State Historic Park. It's found  between the village of Mendocino and Fort Bragg, about halfway between Russian Gulch State Park and Caspar Beach, on Point Cabrillo Drive.
