This is amazing – two people tried to camp IN the Gualala River!

On Sunday the sandbar of the Gualala River apparently looked like a good place to place a tent to two unwary campers. They built a bonfire and seemed pretty happy with life, despite the fact it is illegal to camp IN the river.

Camping in the Gualala River is not a good idea by Ms. Anon

What these visitors didn't know was that the river was going to close to the ocean overnight. Here is a photo of the same spot just twelve hours later.

When their campsite began to flood, they had to pack up in a hurry. I wonder who's idea it was to try and camp there!

What's wrong with the following sentence? As written, does this sentence make sense?
"What these visitors didn't know was that the river was going to close to the ocean overnight."

Perhaps I could have explained this a bit better. The Gualala River often is closed at the mouth due to a huge sandbar. In the winter the river opens and closes many times. In the spring, after the rains have stopped, the river closes one last time until the rains begin in the fall. This is what happened last Sunday. When the river closes, it is like putting a plug in your tub with the water running - it fills up! Today the river is full, closed to the ocean and perfect for kayaking. Hope this makes it clearer, Dan. The Gualala is a fascinating wild river.
